If your designer does not have a portfolio to offer, you don’t necessarily have to run the other way, but you do have to see their caliber of work prior to paying them ANYTHING.

A professional web designer understands that part of their job is to optimize your website for search engines as they design. This is a crucial key to the success of your site design so if your designer tells you that they don’t “do that”, it’s time to question their credentials. Your web designer doesn’t have to be a search engine guru, but they should know how to create a tidy site that is readable by search engines and has the basic search engine necessities completed.
4. Professionalism
No, I’m not talking about the designer themselves (whether or not you want a suit and tie guy is up to you!) but I’m talking about the quality of their portfolio of designs. Do their website designs look professional or does it look as though they’ve just thrown together a few quick websites for friends? Remember, the site you have designed is going to represent your business and the last thing you want to do is give the appearance of an amateur!
