Black Hat – The term “black hat” refers to methods used to rank a website in search engines. “Black hat” methods are questionable methods that often violate terms and services of organizations like Google. Black hat techniques can get your site banned from a search engine. The opposite of black hat is white hat.

Crawling – crawling is the process by which search engines discover your website. When crawling your website, the search engine follows links within the site to discover additional pages to index.

If changes have been made to your website since that last time that it was indexed by search engines, the new changes will reflect the changes that have been made your site and make sure that site viewers get the most up to date information.

Google My Business Listing – A Google My Business listing is a free business directory listing that you can submit your business to. GMB is a good free way to advertise your business and allows for locals to search for and find local businesses in the same way that the yellow pages used to work.

KPI – KPI stands for Key Performance Indicator. A key performance indicator is a measurable value that indicates how well something is performing. For example the number of leads you get from marketing campaign.

Organic – When we refer to something as “organic” we are talking about something that is naturally occurring. So, when your website gets traffic because your site has been indexed in a search engine and someone found that link after searching for something specific. Organic traffic contrasts to paid traffic which is traffic that you get through paid means – for example, a Google Ad campaign.

People Also Ask – Recently you may hear the term “people also ask” being thrown around. This refers to a feature on Google’s search engine. If you type a search query in Google and click “search”, a short way down the page is a box that says “people also ask”. This box gives you related search terms that have been searched by people who also searched for the topic you types in the search bar.

For example, if you type “apples” in a Google search, the “People also ask” box may say “What Are the Benefits of Eating Apples?”

You can use the “People also ask” results to find content ideas when writing articles for your blog or you can use these results to target search traffic.

Rank or Ranking – When we talk about rank or ranking, we are talking about your search engine placement amid search results generated by a specific query.

SERP – SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. The search engine results page is the page of search results that you see when you submit a search on a search engine.

Sitemap – A sitemap is a list of URLS from your website that search engine spiders scan through to discover content on your site and to rank that content on search engines.

Traffic – When we talk about traffic in an SEO format we are talking about visits to your site. So, if you have a high volume of visitors to your website, you have high traffic.

White Hat – The term “white hat” is the opposite of “black hat”. White hat SEO techniques are techniques used to obtain a good rank for a site in a search engine. Unlike black hat techniques, white hat techniques are techniques that are not questionable.
