Internet Reputation Management: 5 Things You Are Doing Wrong!
When it comes to your internet reputation management there are things that you can do to improve your presence and there are things that you should avoid doing. Today we’re looking at five of those things you should avoid…
1. Not Claiming Social Media and Directory Listings
There are a good many online social media platforms and directory listings out there and as a business owner, it’s important that you claim your business listing on as many of these as possible. One of the biggest reasons for this is because any listing is considered “real estate” for your business presence online. Additionally, by claiming your business listing, you are preventing your competitors from claiming your listing and using it to their advantage.
2. Updating Your Website and Social Media Once a Month
One of the reasons that customers and future customers return to your website is because they want to read or view new content. If you do not publish new content, however, you cannot keep those customers coming back which means that you cannot make sales to those customers. By updating your website and social media platforms you are keeping customers interested and increasing the chances that you will make sales.
It’s also important to keep in mind that when you update your website or social media content, you should do so with unique content that is both interesting and relevant to your niche.
3. Letting Unqualified Individuals Manage Your Online Profiles
Whether we’re talking about your social media platforms or your company website, NEVER leave unqualified people in charge of your online presence. Doing this can result in plenty of problems, many of which can’t be remedied easily. These include:
- You can destroy your online reputation by representing your company in an unprofessional manner
- You can ruin your online profiles by editing or deleting the wrong thing
- You can deter customers by presenting your company as one that doesn’t care or isn’t responsive to the needs of customers
- You can isolate potential clients and customers if posts are shared that have a questionable theme
Simply put, you should NEVER put someone in charge of your online presence unless they have experience with reputation management, doing so could ruin your business.
4. Wearing Blinders When it Comes to Good Customers
There are many review websites out there and they serve as a great avenue for funneling customers to your business. Unfortunately, many business owners don’t take full advantage of these review sites because they are too busy focusing on and responding to negative reviews and comments. While it is important to professionally respond to negative reviews and comments, it’s equally as important to respond to positive reviews and comments as well. If you only respond to negative feedback, those customers who leave positive feedback are going to feel unappreciated. What’s the point of leaving a positive review if no one recognizes that review? Taking the time to simply thank the commenter for their message can make all the difference. Responding to positive comments also lets future clients know that they will be valued.
5. Not Responding to Suggestions and Recommendations From Customers
One of the biggest “plusses” to online feedback forums and review websites is that it gives you the means to collect customer feedback and conduct customer research without having to pay ridiculous marketing study budgets. By paying attention to your customer’s suggestions as well as their recommendations you can improve your business model and skyrocket sales by catering to what your customers want rather than what you think they want.
